It might not surprise you to learn that at Upwaltham Barns, we absolutely LOVE weddings cakes. It’s always such a treat to see what baked delights our couples choose, all individual in design but continuing a tradition which dates back to medieval England! Now that Celebrity Bake Off Stand Up To Cancer has finished, we’re missing our weekly dose of cake heaven, so we thought you might like to join us for a look back at some of the fabulous bakes that our couples have had this year. They’re all showstoppers!
Traditional wedding cakes
When it comes to wedding cakes, the traditional designs tend to include three iced tiers. Iced wedding cakes used to signify a family’s wealth because sugar was a very expensive ingredient but now, iced cakes bring a touch of elegance and timeless style to a wedding.
Lots of couples are inspired by the glorious countryside that surrounds Upwaltham Barns and a number of the traditional wedding cakes we’ve seen recently have included the most amazing floral detailing.

If you love this style of cake, why not ask your cake maker if they can decorate your cake with sugar paste flowers that match your bouquet?
For a twist on the quintessential white iced cakes, it’s wonderful to see an iced stacked cake with different coloured layers, especially when the layers include stripes, polka dots, bunting and the most amazing painted flowers!

We also adored a twist on the traditional with delicate ruffles and pleats on a cake that included a dramatic navy blue base layer and the lacy charms of another stunning wedding cake. Our star baker, however, has to go to the family friend of one of our very lucky couples who created them a stunning tiered cake complete with a dazzling golden central layer and handmade origami flowers. That cake certainly had the wow factor!
Contemporary wedding cakes at Upwaltham Barns
One of the hottest wedding cake trends right now has to be for naked cakes and barely-iced semi-naked beauties both of which look fantastic in our South Barn. Semi-naked cakes are usually just covered in a thin layer of yummy buttercream and are decorated with flowers, fresh fruit and a dusting of icing sugar. Cake toppers look fabulous on naked cakes and we also have a soft spot for mini bunting and laser cut toppers with the happy couple’s names.

Delightful drip cakes are also becoming more and more popular too. These always look totally mouth-watering and you just know all your guests will be tempted to indulge. Our favourite drip cakes are decorated with fresh flowers, macarons and personalised ‘Mr & Mrs’ toppers.

Alternative wedding cakes
Of course, you don’t have to choose a big cake if you don’t want to and in fact. For an alternative sweet treat, heavenly cupcakes arranged on an interesting and unusual stand are always a hit. Guests can help themselves, you can serve different flavours, some gluten-free cakes and include a larger cupcake as a top tier for that cake-cutting moment.

Or, should savoury be more your style, a cake of cheese is the perfect choice. No, not a cheesecake with a biscuit base and a fruity sauce but stacked wheels of cheese! Choose your favourite varieties, stack up the various sized wheels and decorate with figs and grapes or fresh flowers and bunting. These are great to look at and great to eat – what’s not to love?
