Three Days In Marrakech choosing Bohemian wedding decor

Tim and Nicola first visited Morocco 12 years ago and were inspired to recreate a gorgeous seated area from the beautiful tranquil Riad where they stayed. Several trips over the years and a collection of cushions, fabrics, carpets and lanterns have been put together to create this individual space at the barns which adds a touch of bohemian to a wedding.

The hunt for new wedding décor

When the Moroccan snug at Upwaltham Barns needed an update Nicola and Sam headed off to Marrakech in search of genuine fabrics and carpets to refresh the Moroccan décor of this unique feature of the wedding venue.

Wedding décor

We needed to source some new fabric for our seat covers and on the first day walked the souks; great fun but we couldn’t find exactly what we wanted. We loved the tranquil Ensemble Artisanal just off the main square which is a cooperative and found some great cushion covers, some made from carpet-like materials and others in lighter cotton and silk fabrics with brighter gold and red colouring. Our first purchases.

Parlais Francais?

During the evening in our best French, we made enquiries as to where the hoteliers of Marrakech go to have their upholstery done. Feeling like intrepid explorers the next day we eventually found an underground fabric wholesalers and were so excited by their fabrics not only the colours and designs but fabulous quality. Naively we asked for 30 metres of this and 20 meters of that and couldn’t understand why we couldn’t have lengths of fabric we needed for our moroccan decor. Then through to another room, there were two enormous looms where our fabric would be made to order and so realistically we could not have more than two different designs made in two days. Moustafa Barek the charming owner helped us chose colours and chatted to the weavers to ensure they would be finished on time. So, we ordered our vibrant fabrics and called in during the day to watch the progress which was just amazing to see, all coming together and made by hand on a very ancient looking loom.

Mint tea and giggles…

Focusing on carpets where some of the salesmen would have preferred to buy us then sell us a carpet!… and after much giggling, mint tea and time we struggled back to our Riad  with lots of fabulous new Moroccan wedding décor purchases destined for Upwaltham Barns.

The Moroccan Snug is a key part of this unusual wedding venue in Sussex and a perfect place to relax during the hustle and bustle of your bohemian wedding day. Knowing how much thought went into the design of this snug shows that every detail of this wedding venue is personal and that the owners, Tim & Nicola, care greatly about each family that spends their day here.
