The First Boho Wedding At Upwaltham Barns

Tim and Nicola were married on the 11th of June 1988 at St Mary The Virgin Church Upwaltham with a reception held at Upwaltham Barns.

It was an original vintage boho wedding full of beautiful flowers, traditional yet with lots of country style and detail thrown in.

Nicola wore a dress designed and made by a local dressmaker Diane Eggington. She had pale pink shoes from Hobbs and a gorgeous bouquet and garland of flowers in her hair made by a florist in the Kings Road. Nicola handmade the bridesmaid dresses herself. She had two bridesmaids and a pageboy, one of which, Holly was married at Upwaltham Barns in 2013.

Tim, who has always had his finger on the pulse, wore a Paul Smith suit, Comme des Garcon shirt and Workers for Freedom tie. At the time all were up and coming cutting edge designers, not the household names they have become today.

The derelict barns of Upwaltham were emptied of straw bales and Landover’s and a marquee was erected on the front of what is now the East Barn. It was unbelievably rough and ready, with mud floor, crumbling stonework and old grain dryers in situ.

Nicola’s mum made the wedding cake. This was all held in what is now the courtyard, as the beautiful gardens that we have today did not exist. The courtyard was really just a rough piece of land next to the barns.

A disco had everyone dancing into the night before Tim and Nicola left for the Angel Hotel in Petworth and onto a honeymoon in the pouring rain of the Seychelles!

And the rest is history…

Having had such a fabulous day, full of family, friends, laughter and an amazing country ambience a seed was sewn with the idea that the barns could convert into a brilliant space for other people to hold their weddings.

Nine years later in 1997 the slow process of renovating the barns started which really has been a labour of love. The first wedding receptions were held in 2001. This is when Tim and Nicola met Dianne Hastie of Country House Wedding Venues who became their mentor, an original “dragon” who advised them on marketing and all things wedding, helping to raise finance through venture capitalist which has enabled the development of the business and beautiful venue they have today.

Tim and Nicola are so thrilled that so many couples have been able to experience the truly special and unique setting of Upwaltham Barns for their own vintage weddings, which made them so happy on a sunny day in 1988.
