After a proposal on a deserted Devon beach where they had to dodge the downpours, Susan and Leigh began to plan their wedding. Knowing that their priorities were a relaxed day that was full of great food and great music, they set out to find the perfect venue that would give them the freedom to have the day they wanted.
Finding ‘the one’
After looking at hotel venues, Susan and Leigh quickly realised that they really wanted a barn wedding venue, so they searched online to find the best ones to visit. When they arrived at Upwaltham Barns, they felt that their wedding dreams had come true.
“We wanted to find somewhere where we could create a day that was bright and fun, that all our family and friends could enjoy with us. When we started looking at barns, Upwaltham was our first stop.”
“Upwaltham Barns instantly felt like home. It’s the most beautiful venue and we simply fell in love the moment we drove through the gates. Every time we visited before our wedding, it was as magical as the first day we arrived and the whole team was so welcoming and attentive.”
Styling Upwaltham Barns
Despite initially wanting an autumn wedding, the couple opted for a spring wedding after they visited Upwaltham in spring, with all the flowers in bloom, they knew the amazing scenery and colour would inspire their day.
“We chose to decorate the barns with lots of natural, wild flowers in a very relaxed style. We loved the idea of lots of colour and had lanterns installed in the South Barn in pastel colours. They looked amazing!”
“Flowers were incredibly important to our day and we spent a lot of time working with our florist, Spriggs The Florist in Petworth, to plan everything. We wanted a very natural feel and used flowers that you would expect to see growing wild in the rolling hills around the venue. The flowers really brought everything together.”
The couple also got crafty with lots of DIY projects including fantastic wedding signs, a gorgeous hoop table plan not to mention hand-writing all the place cards and making signs for the guest book and table numbers.
Dressing for the occasion
Having never been a ‘dressy’ person, Susan found the prospect of shopping for her wedding dress quite daunting. However, when she visited Blessings Bridal, she had such a positive experience that she ordered her dress then and there!
“I wasn’t really sure what I wanted other than something very relaxed and a little bohemian. Blessings Bridal were amazing and really helped me pinpoint what I wanted. I wore Mila by Sincerity Bridal, a dress with layers of soft tulle, a soft lace illusion bodice and lace applique falling from the bodice onto the skirt. It felt just right from the first moment I tried it on.”
Susan completed her bridal look with Irregular Choice shoes and jewellery from The Boho Boutique. She wore her hair in a messy bun, complete with beautiful flowers (and a little confetti later on in the day!)
Susan’s three bridesmaids wore tulle skirts from Revelry with white silk camisoles from Asos. The bridesmaids also had denim jackets as cover-ups, which worked so well with the relaxed vibe of the wedding.
“The groom and groomsmen’s suits came from Black Tie Menswear and Leigh’s suit was fully tailored, giving him the freedom to choose all of the materials and finish. It’s a stunning suit that fits perfectly and will last a lifetime.”
The wedding day
Susan and Leigh held their ceremony in the East Barn and had an intimate horseshoe set-up. The couple’s ceremony included two readings and perfectly chosen music, all of which created a wonderfully warm atmosphere. After the ceremony, the couple were showered in confetti before enjoying their drinks reception in the courtyard.
“We both love simple hearty food so, when it came to choosing the food for our wedding breakfast, we knew what we wanted – tomato soup, roast chicken with all the trimmings and a delicious crumble for pudding. The Nibbles2Nosh team worked incredibly hard throughout the day and everything was seamless. Guests have commented on the food (which was to die for!) and the exemplary service.”
The 88s from Toast Functions made sure the dancefloor was packed all evening. We loved seeing Susan, Leigh and all of their guests celebrating in style here at Upwaltham Barns.
Wedding tips & advice
“We had lots of time to plan but I think, with a wedding, you can never have too much time. There are always little things that you can put off or imagine that they will be ‘quick’ jobs so just try to be as organised as possible.”
“Also, do make use of the people around you. It’s lovely to have your bridesmaids, groomsmen and family involved in some of the prep work so that they get a little snippet of what the day will be like so you can all look forward to it together.”
