Rachel & Patrick’s personal summer wedding

The couple having a intimate moment at Upwaltham Barns

Rachel and Patrick wanted their wedding day to feel special and personal and look utterly beautiful. Their summer wedding at Upwaltham Barns was definitely that and the day was full of wonderful, romantic and meaningful details.

Finding ‘the one’

Rachel and Patrick were lucky enough to be able to get married at Arundel Cathedral and Rachel’s uncle, a Bishop, received special permission to conduct their traditional ceremony. This meant that the couple was looking for a beautiful reception venue that was close enough to Arundel to make travel easy for their guests. Luckily, they found Upwaltham Barns:

“Upwaltham Barns was the first venue we visited and even though it was an awful rainy day we both loved it! We visited countless more venues but nothing compared to Upwaltham. We visited again and it happened to be a beautiful bright day and then we knew – it was a definite yes!”

Styling Upwaltham Barns

To fulfill their dream of a beautiful wedding day, Rachel and Patrick didn’t choose a particular theme and instead, they concentrated on creating the perfect look at Upwaltham Barns with lots of flowers in coordinating soft colours that were accessorised with brilliant details:

“The reception barns are naturally very pretty so lots of flowers and candles made the setting perfect. We filled the venue with flowers and these became the central decoration. We had candles in all the nooks in the barn walls as well and candles in the courtyard and we also decorated a little teepee for the children. This became a bit of a hideaway for them!”

“My dad also bought us an amazing vintage Ferris wheel that he found at a local garden centre. We decorated it with lights, which looked incredible at night. It was a real feature in the courtyard and symbolic of Paddy’s and my favourite band, The Gaslight Anthem. We first started talking about this band when we met and discovered we both loved them. It felt only right that our first dance song was one of theirs and this was the first real decision we made about our wedding.”

Dressing for the occasion

Rachel looked absolutely beautiful in an Annasul Y dress bought from Teokath in Wimbledon. The soft layers and exquisite beading were absolutely perfect for the romantic look Rachel wanted and her choice of accessories was just fabulous:

“I wore a full-length cathedral veil with lace and beading around the edge and the shape perfectly matched my dress. My shoes had to be Jimmy Choo! What bride doesn’t want to say ‘I do’ in Jimmy Choo’? I bought a diamante hair vine that added a delicate amount of sparkle and because the neckline of my dress swept across the collarbone, I didn’t want to wear a necklace. I did go for sparkly drop pearl earrings by Stephanie Browne from Liberty in Love.”

Patrick wore a tailor-made Moss Bros three-piece suit in navy blue with a pink and grey paisley lining. He also wore his wedding present from Rachel on the day – a Tag Heuer watch that made sure he got to the ceremony on time!

The wedding day

After a very emotional service at Arundel cathedral, presided over by Rachel’s uncle, the newlyweds and their guests arrived at Upwaltham Barns to begin their celebrations. The drinks reception in the sunny courtyard featured Prosecco with edible flowers and bottled beers alongside “the yummiest canapés that included mini Yorkshire puddings, salt & pepper squid and prawn & chorizo skewers.”

“We had an afternoon acoustic set during the drinks reception that played in the courtyard – they created a really fabulous ambience as guests arrived and continued to play until the meal was served.”

And the wedding breakfast from Nibbles to Nosh was a huge hit with guests, who loved the main course of beef served two ways served in the stunning South Barn. Rachel and Patrick received so many compliments on the quality and quantity of the meat and the couple was also thrilled to include some seafood on the menu to reflect their love of Cornwall.

“The catering team had a variety of menu options and worked with us to make it perfect for our guests. We had a menu tasting where the barn was set up like a wedding so we were able to experience the barns as guests. The food was so delicious, we could have chosen anything and still been happy.”

The couple’s lucky guests were also treated to personalised favours including CDs featuring music from the wedding day and tracks requested by guests plus little forget-me-not seed sachets. The final detail of the day was a cigar bar, organised by the groom, that was tucked away in the Moroccan seating area and it’s fair to say this was very popular indeed!

Wedding tips & advice

Rachel and Patrick had a wonderful day at Upwaltham Barns and have some very special memories to take with them into married life:

“There are a few really significant parts to the day that will stick with me forever. The moment my dad saw me in my wedding dress for the first time. You can see it in the wedding video. It makes me cry every time I watch it.”

“During the speeches, Paddy and a dear friend of ours grabbed their guitars and Paddy sung to me – that was such a wonderful surprise and really did just make the evening so special. The song was called ‘Wonderful Life’ and he ended the song by saying, ‘please raise your glasses to my new wife and our wonderful life’. It was a real tear-jerker!”

Walking down the aisle with her father by her side

As for wedding planning advice, Rachel has two very simple tips for everyone:

“My dad reminded me to walk slowly down the aisle. I was so grateful as you forget how fast you walk and it really made us slow down and enjoy the moment. It was like slow motion and I was able to see all our guest’s faces as we walked towards the altar.”

“Our wedding day was beyond perfect and I wouldn’t change any of it. If there’s one piece of advice I would give, I would say – just take it all in.”
