Following a New Years’ Day proposal Krista & Andrew set about finding the perfect place for a summer wedding which would reflect their love of the outdoors & garden parties. Sussex was a natural place to start looking having met at Sussex University.
Finding ‘the one’
“We knew we wanted a barn type wedding, something relaxed and not too formal. We came across Upwaltham Barn from just searching on google. It was by far the best barn we had visited in Sussex and we instantly feel in love with its character and charm. We knew we wouldn’t need to decorate it loads as it was so naturally stunning with all the flowers”.
Styling Upwaltham Barns
Going with the garden party theme there was lots of bunting, garden games, pretty summer flowers in glass vases & of course Pimm’s to drink after the ceremony.
“Pinterest was my main platform for inspiration – so quick and easy to get ideas on anything from flowers, ceremony decorations, hair styles etc.”
Dressing for the occasion
“I bought it in Australia when visiting my sister for her wedding in April 2018. My sister took me to the same dress shop where she got hers. We were with my mum too, so it was a perfect occasion! The dress was designed by Stella York. I loved the neckline (off the shoulder) and wanted something with lots of lace.”
Andrew wore a sage green three-piece suit from Moss Bros. His suit was herringbone tweed so in keeping with the country/garden party theme.
The wedding day
The East Barn was laid out with a church style aisle lined with candlelit lanterns & scattered with petals. Family & friends were included in the ceremony with three readings.
“Our registrar was wonderful – she made us feel really comfortable and at ease.”
A wedding breakfast of sharing platters of roast chicken with summer vegetables followed by passion fruit meringues set the scene for a relaxed afternoon, followed by witty & heart-warming speeches. Later in the evening Sussex based 4-piece band The New Tones played Luther Vandross ‘Never Too Much’ for our first dance.
“We love going to gigs and festivals so it was important we had a band on the night and it was worth every single penny.”
Capturing the day
“We found our wonderful photographer Adorlee Weddings online. We loved her style, it was very natural, relaxed and not too formal. We also hired a videographer after it being one thing friends/family had regretted not having on their big days. We found Ben from BH Photography & Video on Poptop, we love our highlight video so much. It will be played every anniversary!”
Wedding tips and advice
“Book Upwaltham Barns – you cannot go wrong. Have enough time to plan, we had a year and half which was great. Plenty of time to make the day as perfect as you want and to manage the costs of it all. Do not rush the suppliers you pick – get referrals/recommendations where you can and take your time to research to get the best people.”
