On their annual trip to Luke’s hometown in the Algarve, Luke decided to pop the question to girlfriend Jenny while overlooking the ocean. Soon after arriving home, the couple started looking for the perfect setting – the question being should they celebrate at home, or away in Portugal?
Finding ‘the one’
Jenny and Luke had considered getting married in Portugal but knew this would cause difficulties for the older members of Jenny’s family. With this in mind, they started to look closer to their home in London for a pretty and rustic wedding venue.
“We were utterly blown away by the ambience of Upwaltham Barns. The owner and wedding team were so helpful and I loved that there were two barns – one for the ceremony, the other for the wedding breakfast.” – Jenny
The pair were also taken with the quaint honeymoon cottage, located on site, and the cottage balcony – which proved to be very useful when it came to the photographs!
Styling Upwaltham Barns
Jenny had always dreamed of a rustic-inspired day – and luckily the same theme also worked well with Upwaltham Barns. The couple hired a stylist to help them to get their ideas just right, and themed their wedding around lavender and gypsophila flowers.
“Hiring a stylist was definitely the right decision. I’m a bit of a control freak and didn’t want to spend the morning of the wedding worrying about setting up and how everything looked!” – Jenny
Dressing for the occasion
Jenny began her search for the perfect gown in London, but didn’t enjoy the experience or the atmosphere of many of the shops. Eventually, she went to a boutique closer to her family home in the countryside, where she found her dream dress.
“The team at Karen Forte were so lovely. They asked me about the wedding, my style, and any body hang-ups and then identified a few dresses for me to try. The Maggie Sottero dress fitted like a glove and was so comfortable.” – Jenny
The rest of the wedding party dressed in colours to complement the lavender colour palette. Luke and his groomsmen dressed in blue, while Jenny’s three bridesmaids wore patterned heather dresses and her chief bridesmaid opted for dark blue.
The wedding day
Jenny and Luke got married in Upwaltham Barn’s East Barn, with a string quartet providing the music.
“The whole thing was so relaxed – we even got the giggles half way through!” – Jenny
Despite their November wedding date, the couple were able to enjoy a drinks reception outside, as they sipped on Prosecco and tucked into some delicious canapés. Their reception was followed by a wedding breakfast inside, accompanied by music from the Piano Man.
“We had discovered our pianist in Piano Bar Kensington and he was sensational. He played all the songs requested by our guests and was there throughout the evening.” – Jenny
With superb live music to enjoy, the pair chose to have both a first and a last dance, closing with Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud.
“The whole barn was lit with candles, making the dance very memorable – the day was perfect.” – Jenny
