Angela and Sean’s Vintage-Inspired Wedding Day

Angela and Shaun's wedding at Upwaltham Barns

Despite planning a weekend away to Italy’s most romantic city, Venice, Angela had no idea that a proposal would be on the cards. Once the four magic words had sunk in, and the couple returned back home, they set upon planning the perfect day…

Finding ‘the one’

Angela and Sean knew they wanted a relaxed and rustic barn setting for their wedding, but it took them a while to find their perfect barn venue.

“As soon as we came across Upwaltham Barns we both said it was the perfect place.” – Angela.

The couple felt welcomed by the venue owners, Tim and Nicola, and knew they’d enjoy a warm and welcoming wedding. They also loved the style and décor throughout, plus the honeymoon cottage, Jasmine Cottage, which they’d stay in on the night of their wedding.

Styling Upwaltham Barns

The barns’ rustic style and features were the starting point for the couple’s décor. They added country garden-inspired flowers to the setting and a few vintage touches, including a vintage frame table plan with luggage tags, and paper pom poms, which they hung from the ceiling of the barn.

Angela and Sean were also keen to welcome their guests with a few extra special touches. They set up a basket of flip-flops for the ladies to change into at night; left a few party essentials, such as painkillers and perfumes, in the bathrooms; and hired an ice cream cart and photo booth for the guests to enjoy during the reception.

“The most important thing was for our guests to enjoy themselves and feel welcome.” – Angela

In keeping with their theme, the pair also opted for a rustic-inspired wedding cake with American buttercream. The three-tier cake was decorated with sugar peonies, raffia bows, and had mini bunting placed on the top.

Dressing for the occasion

Angela wore a vintage-inspired dress by Jenny Packham. The Gatsby-style gown was adorned with shimmering beads. Angela looked like a real Hollywood star.

“Finding the right dress was very important. I wanted to feel comfortable yet stand out in something unusual and glamorous. You only get to wear a dress like that once!” Angela

Sean dressed to impress in a blue fitted suit and Angela’s bridesmaids wore blue too, with dresses designed and made by Angela’s mother.

“My two bridesmaids looked absolutely beautiful. I was so proud having them by my side on the day.” – Angela

The wedding day

Angela and Sean enjoyed a summer wedding in July at Upwaltham Barns. A harpist provided the music and friends and family added a personal touch with heartfelt readings.

“We asked them not to tell us what they were reading so it was a lovely surprise on the day, especially as they were so different.” – Angela

The couple celebrated their marriage with a prosecco and Pimms reception outside where they also enjoyed ice cream! The wedding breakfast followed and included a three-course meal with a Mediterranean tartlet starter, chicken and chorizo main, and chocolate cheesecake for desert.

Throughout the afternoon, and into the evening, guests were entertained with a fabulous photo booth and dance floor classics played by their DJ. The couple also added an extra special touch at the end of the night with sparklers.

“If we could do it all again we’d do it exactly the same. We loved every part of it.” – Angela

Angela’s Wedding tips and advice

  1. Enjoy the planning process and don’t put too much pressure on yourselves – go on date nights and enjoy yourselves!
  2. Don’t stress about your wedding – it’s not worth it. If you’re feeling the pressure chat to family and friends and ask for help.
  3. Don’t be afraid to do things your way. We weren’t too keen on having a first dance, so we chose a song that started off slow to start with, where we danced alone, before welcoming our family and friends on the dance floor part way through.
